Louie
is a buoy in the Bay of St. Louis. When the Coast Guard
placed him in the Bay, Lieutenant Manly marked his exact
position on a nautical chart. It was important for Louie
to stand firm in this spot, it marked the safe channel
for all boat captains traveling through the Bay and up
the rivers.
Louie had a happy life in the Bay. He enjoyed the many
birds that perched on his crossbeams, and the fish and
sea creatures that swam around his legs. He remained firmly
in position and proudly guided the variety of boats that
passed him every day.
Early one August morning a friendly boat captain warned
Louie of the dangerous hurricane heading toward the Bay.
Louie had been through many storms and had never moved,
so he was confident that he would stand firm now. The
boat captains could count on him.
This is the story of the trials, tribulations, and ultimate
triumph of a buoy on that fateful day when Hurricane Camille
devastated the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
This story is based on an Andry family experience and
story about a beacon/channel marker in the Bay of St.
Louis lovingly named by the children growing up along
Sandy Hook Drive. They watched its blinking light at night,
and sailed, fished, and swam around it during the day.
Amid all the devastation left by Hurricane Camille, the
children were most concerned about the fate of the missing
buoy.
It is a fortunate twist of irony that this book about
a buoy that survives Hurricane Camille also survived Hurricane
Katrina. Allain and Judy Andry, their daughter Katie Crosby,
and myself met in the bookstore during mid-August to discuss
the promotion of the book and to set a date for the signing
in early November. The book was just arriving in the San
Francisco port from the print shop overseas and was to
be trucked to a warehouse in New Orleans. For a few weeks
after Hurricane Katrina I assumed that the book about
Hurricane Camille was lost to Hurricane Katrina. But then
I heard from Katie and she said the book was safe, held
up in overland transit due to the Hurricane.
Allain C. Andry III is an attorney and Savings and Loan
Executive in New Orleans where he lives with his wife
Judy in the French Quarter. They had spent their weekends
in Pass Christian prior to Hurricane Katrina. Tazewell
S. Morton III divides his time between Pass Christian
and Auburn, Alabama.
The story of Louie The Buoy is sure to delight every child.
It is charmingly written and tells a great story (this
mature adult was captivated). The art fits the story perfectly
and is beautifully rendered. I am sure that many adults
without children in the household will purchase this book
as a keepsake of our art and lives here on the Mississippi
Gulf Coast.
