"MERLE’S DOOR:
Lessons from a Freethinking Dog"
While on a river camping trip in Utah, Kerasote met a Labrador mix who was living on his own in the wild. They became attached to each other, and Kerasote decided to name the dog Merle and bring him home to rural Wyoming. What marked a close and lasting bond between the remarkable Merle and Kerasote were the lessons they learned from each other. Kerasote taught Merle how to balance living with humans and in the wild, and Merle influenced Kerasote’s beliefs about the intelligence of dogs and their need to experience the world around them.
Acting as Merle’s translator, Kerasote allows us to understand the issues that dogs face as they develop relationships with their human companions. Deftly weaving the story of Merle’s life and lessons with the latest research on animal consciousness and behavior, MERLE’S DOOR shows us how dogs might live if we gave them more freedom, no matter where we live.
